Chopin: Nocturn in B Major, Op. 9, No. 3. This performance is a recording of Anne-Marie McDermott at the Donovan Pavilion in Vail, Colorado during the summer of 2025.
This was recorded by me using a Zoom F8n recorder and four microphones. The microphone array consisted of two internal microphones, a stereo pair of DPA 4099s, and two external small-diaphragm condenser microphones. The external pair were positioned from the stage aimed toward the piano lid to capture the natural resonance and room reflections of the instrument within the pavilion. The internal DPA 4099 microphones were placed closer to the instrument oriented toward the strings to capture articulation and detail directly from the hammers.
To maintain phase coherence between the internal and external microphone pairs, a short delay was applied to the internal microphones, accounting for the difference in sound arrival time due to their respective placements. Gain levels were set during sound check and adjusted as needed throughout the performance to ensure optimal headroom and a clean, high-quality recording.
Post-production mixing was completed by me, balancing clarity, warmth, and spatial depth appropriate for an archival classical recording. The final mix was then cataloged and stored in the Bravo! Vail archival system.
